Etivaz – Les Bornels – Le Devant de l’Etivaz – Le Pissot – Les Moulins

  • Distance : 7,5 km Walking time : 2h15
  • Altitudes : lowest point 891 m ; highest point 1250 m
  • Elevation - loss in meter : gain 287 m ; loss 535 m

The trail leaves from the Etivaz caves, where Etivaz AOP is aged to perfection. After several meters on the road, the trail climbs toward the chapel before joining a road that goes back down the valley via pastures on the right bank. When the road enters the forest, look for a path that splits off into the woods and pastures. Follow the path until it meets back up with the road, a few hundred meters further. Etivaz AOP is produced in several of the chalets in this area. Follow the trail as it curves left and goes down to meet the main road in Devant de l’Etivaz.  After 200m on the main road, the route descends in the forest near the Torneresse river. Walk along the increasingly steep-sided, right bank, then follow the road for several hundred meters to where the path splits off, climbing to offer impressive views of the Pissot gorges below.  From this viewpoint, the path drops back down through the forest and across the main road. Descend to the village of the Moulins through valley floor prairies and pastures, scattered with traditional homes.

From the Combes, the route crosses prairies and pastures before coming to the Sarine. Cross the river just before Gérignoz village. Because gorges are particularly steep here, the route pulls away from the Sarine on the left bank at the village exit, then climbs back down to the river via a forest path. Walk the path to the Ramaclé Waterfall and along a protected alluvial zone, extremely important to the natural flow of the Sarine and home to diverse flora. Cross to the right bank over an old, suspension bridge and follow the road to Château-d’Œx.

The route then joins a small path over the steep, rocky banks of Ciernes Picat stream.  Follow the stream to the road. Walk along the road to the Ciernes Picat hamlet, then cross the stream. Climb toward the alpages (alpine pastures/farms) overlooking the valley, alternating walking on the road and on forest paths. The route borders several alpages, some of which produce Etivaz AOP. Hike over the pass where the route forks left on the road then meets up with a pedestrian path. The path descends through pastures and forests, dropping along the Laitemaire crest to Bossons. From this neighborhood, follow the main road to the center of Château-d’Œx.
